Is the ASVAB Hard?

Is the ASVAB a hard test to take? Is it difficult to get a good score on the ASVAB test? There is no easy answer to the question as many people easily ace the ASVAB while many others find the ASVAB test to be a massive struggle.

Most people who find the ASVAB test to be a difficult test also struggle on other standardized tests. Luckily, you can take practice tests to familiarize yourself with the structure of the ASVAB test.

The ASVAB is English Only

The ASVAB test is only offered in English, which means that if English is not your native language you may be at a slight disadvantage while taking the test. The ASVAB is only offered in English as that is the primary method of communication used in the United States Military.

What are your Strengths and Weaknesses?

While practicing for the ASVAB it is important to identify your strengths and weaknesses on the test. Do you ace the paragraph comprehension section but struggle with arithmetic reasoning. Do you get questions right but run out of time? Take the time and practice taking sample ASVAB tests and identify the sections you need to spend more time on.

Even if you feel that you are excelling at a particular category of the ASVAB it is important to know whether or not you will score well enough to get your desired position within the military. Ask your recruiter or school counselor about ASVAB scores and positions.

AFQT Score Sections

The ASVAB is comprised of many different sections, testing your knowledge of various subjects. Your AFQT score is determined by your tests results from the paragraph comprehension, word knowledge, arithmetic reasoning, and mathematic reasoning sections. While there are some sections of the ASVAB that you may not have covered in high school such as mechanical comprehension, automotive information and electronics information, those sections do not account for your overall AFQT score.

Non-AFQT influenced sections are important, as they can determine specific roles within the military that you are qualified for, you can focus your efforts and practice on the sections mentioned above. Feel free to take our practice tests for each of the AFQT score sections:
