Minimum Scores

To enlist in the Coast Guard, you will need a high school diploma — or be on track to earn one before you enlist — along with a qualifying Coast Guard ASVAB score. The Coast Guard requires a minimum AFQT score of 32 for applicants who hold a high school diploma, according to the Coast Guard’s official recruiting site. Applicants with a GED rather than a diploma generally need a minimum score of 50. However, nearly all those who enlist in the Coast Guard have high school diplomas and the Coast Guard rarely makes exceptions, so it is strongly recommended that you complete your high school education before enlisting.

Keep in mind that meeting the minimum does not guarantee acceptance. The Coast Guard is the smallest branch of the armed services and consistently meets its recruiting goals, which allows it to be highly selective. Most applicants who are accepted score well above the minimum, so treat 32 as a floor rather than a target.
